Sunday at the Lake – finding just the right spot

I had a bit of an epiphany five or six years ago while feeling a bit sorry for myself. I chose to seek out a solution to hanging out on a luxurious beach by finding my own blue-collar spot closer to home. That became the inspiration for “Sunday at the Lake,” a watercolor painting that brings a smile to my face every time I look at it.

There is a nearby state lake system that is extremely crowded during the summer months. kids, parents, toys, music, it’s a wonderful family environment, but not so great for a single dude who just wants to hang out by the water. I struck out on foot with my lawn chair, cooler, and Hawaiin shirt looking for that just right spot.

I passed by a couple of hundred beach-goers, around the corner and through the weeds. Here was a nice sandy spot, about 200 feet in length and not a sole in sight. The water gets deep, quickly here, making it unfriendly to children. What that amounts to is a “mostly” quiet spot. Yes, there are lots of boats and personal watercraft, but that’s water life in general, right?

So this painting is that spot, a spot that a hang out at three or four times a summer for a couple of hours and a handful of beers. It’s therapeutic, it’s cool, and it’s lake life at its best, without having to rake the beach.
